Toyota Mark X Review
2017-2019
The Toyota Mark X (GRX130 Facelift II: 2016–2019) is one of Kenya's most revered executive sports sedans. Renowned for its front-engine rear-wheel-drive (FR) layout, velvet-smooth V6 engines, sharp front fascia with triple LED headlamps, and sport-tuned suspension, the Mark X remains a status symbol among corporate professionals and automotive enthusiasts in Nairobi. Powered by the 2.5L 4GR-FSE V6 (203 hp) and high-output 3.5L 2GR-FSE V6 (318 hp), production officially concluded in December 2019 with the coveted Final Edition. Landed import prices in Kenya range from KSh 2.4M to KSh 3.8M.

What’s good
- Sub-2,500 cc KRA tax advantage (2.5L): The 2,499 cc 4GR-FSE engine qualifies for the 25% excise duty rate.
- Smooth V6 performance & RWD handling: Near 50:50 weight distribution provides exceptional highway overtaking balance and cornering stability.
- Timeless sporty executive styling: Triple LED headlights, dual chrome exhaust outlets, and plush Alcantara/leather interior.
- Strong local resale value: One of the most liquid secondhand vehicles in Nairobi and major Kenyan urban centers.
What’s not so good
- Low 155 mm ground clearance: Requires cautious driving over tall estate speed bumps and unpaved upcountry access roads.
- Discontinued model production: Production ended in December 2019, making clean 2018/2019 low-mileage JDM units increasingly exclusive.

About the Toyota Mark X
Kenya strictly enforces an 8-year age limit from manufacture month and right-hand drive regulations. In 2026, 2018 to 2019 final-production Mark X models sit inside the direct import window.
Crucially, the 2.5L 4GR-FSE engine (2,499 cc) stays strictly at 2,499 cc, qualifying for KRA's standard 25% excise duty tax bracket and saving over KSh 700,000 in import taxes compared to the 3.5L V6 variant.

Tax figures are estimates based on October 2026 KRA schedules. Always verify specific chassis CRSP entries with your clearing agent prior to purchase.
